Gardening in Old Containers

Hello from Oklahoma......if you haven't heard it's been raining buckets here...and it's still raining today. A friend of mine told me it was time to invest in a canoe so Mr. Wade could row me up and down the front of the farm and pretend like we are on vacation in Italy. We've had that much water here.

With all the water coming down the plants in my containers are really starting to take off.  A friend of mine brought this down to the farm for me when her neighbor in the city through it out. I was so excited when she texted me the pic.

Last Fall I filled it with bulbs and pansies. The bulbs never came up but the pansies have grown huge. I divided some Iris bulbs and stuck them in there to fill out and some of our dishes left from our house fire a few years ago and voila..... a pretty Spring container.

I tucked in a few petunias to give it some more color and I'm really happy with it.

Down by the front of our property I've been working on a fun junk garden. I also inherited this old feeding bucket and decided it would look pretty with flowers too.

I made up some of my own potting soil last year and let it break down and the Mr. hauled some buckets of it down to the front and I filled the pot with some more Irises and some petunias.

In a few weeks they will be spilling over. I'm also going to plant mint and Hyacinth bean vine all around them and it should be lush and beautiful within a month or so. I'm so excited for our visitors and people who drive by to see some color out here.

Fingers crossed that I will keep inheriting more containers. I had Mr.Wades cousin drag up some old bathtubs from the pasture and can't wait to get them planted.

Have you been busy planting yet?

  2. Love the old galvanized containers for planting! I tried large container gardening last year but didn't drill holes in the bottom....I didn't want to in case I wanted to use the container for something else. I used broken pieces of terra cotta pots for drainage.Well, my plants got really soggy and were living in mud! Do you drill holes in yours?

  29. At least you are making good use of all the water! Gardening must be so relaxing. I don't like being outside all that much. Living in Florida, the elements are quite brutal.
