The Ultimate Air Freshener to Remove Dog and Cat Urine
Let's chat for a bit can we? I love going to visit my friends and family members and I love it when strangers stop by....anyone who knows me knows that I've never met a stranger. Can I be honest with you though? I sometimes worry about what my house smells like since we live on a farm with a lot I mean A LOT of animals. It's nothing for us to haul a goat in to the bathroom to give birth or abandoned dogs who are pregnant. Cats show up pregnant all of the time and it's always when it's cold. Do you know where they all end up to stay warm? My bathroom. I've lost count of the number of animals born on the bathroom floor or in the bathtub. Don't judge me...you would do it too.
The thing is sometimes the bathroom and the hallway pick up an odor that I just can't remove sometimes until I make up my own mix. I've tried multiple over the counter enzyme products and Odo-Ban works fairly well...but I always end up in a coughing fit when I use it.

Wanna know what has really worked? Two things...
1. Cleaning the surface really well by sweeping and vacuuming. Wiping it down with a vinegar based cleaner...you can read more about that here.
then I
2. Mix 1 16 oz. container Hydrogen Peroxide
1 T Baking Soda
1 t Dawn Dish Soap
in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray it everywhere. For the most part it will work. Now if your carpet is soaked in urine and you have clothes, towels and bedding that have urine on them and need to be washed...do that too and wash it with a 1/4 cup of vinegar. Sometimes you have to use the pre-soak function.
**** another hint....if you do have fabric items that have urine on them rinse them off with water in your tub, tower or sink. It helps to get the odor out. The faster you rinse it the better the chance you have of getting the odor out.
My experience with urine is carpet is that it's next to impossible to get out. Once it is in there...you almost have to pull up the carpet and clean underneath. We will never have carpet in our home again. Kids + animals + red dirt = no carpet.
Now the concentration of the urine can make a difference too. I always try to air out the area to by opening the door and windows. That's not always possible given the time of year.
I'm also a huge fan of essential oils. My experience is that cinnamon essential oils are the most potent to cover the smell of urine. Use it at your own risk. ( Never use essential oils if you have cats.)
Will this get it all out. No. Will it get the majority out for those of you who have hard surfaces? Yes.
So next time you need something quick to remove the smell give this a try. Be sure to test it on a side part of the fabric you may spray it on so it doesn't stain.
Happy Cleaning,
Valerie

I can't wait to try out the hydrogen peroxide mixture! While I don't have a farm, I have one large dog, two cats, and a bird so there's always pet mess or smell. With a bird everything has to be mild and natural since they're sensitive to chemicals. Completely agree regarding carpet and urine. Once it gets in, it soaks into the subflooring and is impossible to remove without tearing everything up.
ReplyDeleteI love that you shared this cleaning tip.
ReplyDeleteWell-written, too.
We have dogs and we do the bicard/white vinegar.
Works really well with vomits.
I never tried peroxide, will give that a go.
I use it for other things, why not the pets too?
Thanks girl. Happy Christmas to you and your family.
Every now and then, Lizzie thinks out of the box. Usually right NEXT to the box, so the floor is cement but still... I've had some luck with enzyme cleaners but I think I'll make up a bottle of this to be prepared. And hope I don't have to use it!
ReplyDeleteI like the simple ingredients because I usually have on hand. I will have to try this mixture out!
ReplyDeleteThis is very helpful! Do you have any miracle flea treatments, lol? We just went through a long process of eradicating them. We had to do it chemical free because we have too many small children.
ReplyDeleteI have boy so this would be great for their bathroom. Their bathroom always smells of pee.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. Sounds like an easy way to get rid of urine smells. And cat pee is the worst.
ReplyDeleteHi Valerie. Good cleaning tips. Unfortunately, if you have pets you have to put up with some of the negative (there really aren't very many) things that happen. Thank you for your visit and the kind birthday wishes. I'm glad that I can put out my little tree again this year..Happy Weekend..Judy
ReplyDeleteWe have a rescue cat that unfortunately likes to use the corner of the litter box and frequently ends up getting urine on the outside of the box and surrounding floor. The floor is ceramic tile, so porous. Hopefully this will help. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is actually so helpful. Our cat recently had issues using the litter tray when peeing so we have a slight smell around her litter tray. This should clear it right up!
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely helpful! I've heard about using vinegar for odors and stains before. I've used it in the shower and it really works. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteOooh I need this in my life! Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us!
ReplyDeleteI use vinegar quite a bit for odors. It works really well.
ReplyDeleteOh interesting! Having pets can be messy! I feel the same way about carpet. Once it's been soiled, it's almost a lost cause.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love that you’re willing to bring so many animals into your house who need help! And thanks for the tip. With two dogs of our own it’s definitely something we can use.
ReplyDeleteWe just got a dog and this is very useful for us. Thanks ...
ReplyDeleteThis is genius! We don't have pets, but we've had some pretty intractable aftermath-of-carsickness odors in our cars, and will def have to try these tips next time that happens!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to give this a try. I have spot in my office that my dog keeps leaving me little presents on so I think this might stop that from happening.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!! I agree Odo-ban works great but it always makes me cough because of the strong chemical smell! I'll have to try your baking soda concoction!
