Super Cute Valentine's Day Rag Wreath

Howdy folks, it's been a great week here at the farm until today when our 70 degree temp.'s disappeared and the 30 mph winds returned with the cold....bummer... just in time for the weekend.

I can't believe we are already at the end of Jan. but it's time to get some Valentine's decor made. My mom started making rag wreaths well before I was born and I had 3 or 4 wire hangers and some leftover fabric laying around and thought why not. I've given up pop and I am working hard to lose weight so keeping my fingers busy in the evenings helps.

Now I opted to use 3 different fabrics, If you don't have any fabric laying around look through your closet and drawers and find old jeans, socks, curtains, ribbons, stained clothing anything that has colors that you love and parts of the fabric that are still good.

Then you are going to need a wire hanger. If you don't have one just ask a friend or neighbor people can't give these babies away fast enough. Now go ahead and flex those muscles and stretch the hanger into the best possible circular shape you can manage.

Now start cutting strips that are a little over an inch wide and 4 to 4 1/2 inches long. If you don't get them perfect no big deal you can trim them all up when you are finished tying.

Now just start tying the fabric on the hanger like you are tying your shoes without the bow. I rotated my colors for fun. Fabric that wasn't printed on both sides used to bother me but lately I've just rolled with the punches. Once I hang the wreaths I can face the pretty side up.

I used red, black, and this cute polka-dot. Rag wreaths will end up everywhere in my home and all over the farm. I still have 2 my mom made years before I was even born. This is a no cost project and fun to make for all ages and all holidays. I even use a few for everyday use.

Once you've tied the fabric all on the hanger, then scrunch it all up tight and then add more fabric. It always makes the wreath look better. If you have a few pieces where the fabric seems longer just take your scissors and even it up. Next, hang them everywhere.  The more the merrier.

Simple, colorful, fun, festive, and free.... my kind of craft.

Whatcha doin this weekend?

Hugs from Oklahoma,

Valerie

  18. I appreciate people who want to decorate with wreaths outside of just Christmas! (Mainly because i get so sad when Christmas is over so I want to prolong the festive decorations for as long as possible).

  25. Our weather has been really crazy here as well. One moment it is like fall, and then it is full blown winter mode and we're all freezing! I'm still in disbelief that it is already January and Valentine's Day is around the corner. Love your wreath! So simple and cute.

  26. What a cute idea! I love the fabrics you've chosen. I've made my mom a Valentine's Day wreath using faux flowers and some cute glitter hearts. I made it years ago and she still uses it today so I know what you mean about family heirlooms!
